Functional Medicine

If you’ve been told your labs are “normal” but you still feel off, functional medicine looks deeper — at the systems and root causes behind how you feel, so you can perform at your best. Start with an initial appointment.

Treating the cause, not the symptom

Functional medicine treats the body as an interconnected system. Instead of matching a symptom to a prescription, we map how your hormones, gut, metabolism, nutrition, and lifestyle interact — then address the upstream cause.

It’s the right approach for the stubborn, multi-system complaints that conventional, time-pressured visits often miss.

Common reasons patients come to us

Fatigue & brain fog

When “you’re fine” doesn’t match how you actually feel.

Gut & digestion

Bloating, irregularity, and food reactions with no clear answer.

Thyroid & autoimmunity

Hashimoto’s and other conditions needing root-cause work-ups.

What to expect

What a functional work-up includes

  • Advanced labs well beyond a standard panel
  • A full history — lifestyle, nutrition, stress, and sleep
  • How your hormones, gut, and metabolism interact
  • A personalized, root-cause plan from Dr. Hoff
  • Ongoing adjustments as your data and life change

What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine is a way of practicing medicine that asks why. Conventional care is excellent at diagnosing a disease and matching it to a treatment. But many people don’t have a clear diagnosis — they have fatigue, weight gain, poor sleep, digestive trouble, or low mood that keeps getting labeled “normal.”

A functional medicine doctor looks at how your systems interact: hormones, blood sugar, gut, immune system, nutrients, sleep, and stress. The goal is to find the upstream driver and treat it, so symptoms improve because the cause does. At True You, that work is led by Brian C. Hoff, MD — a medical doctor who uses advanced testing and evidence-based treatments alongside nutrition and lifestyle.

Who it’s for

Functional medicine may be a good fit if you…

  • Have symptoms that have lasted months or years without a clear answer
  • Have been told your labs are “normal” but still don’t feel right
  • Deal with several issues at once — energy, weight, sleep, gut, mood
  • Want more time with a physician than a standard visit allows
  • Prefer understanding the cause over adding another prescription
  • Want to prevent problems you see in your family history

How it works

What to expect at your first visit

From your first conversation to a plan you understand.

  1. 01

    Step 1

    Your story first

An in-person visit at our Fredericksburg office covering your symptoms, history, nutrition, sleep, stress, and goals — with time to actually talk.

  2. 02

    Step 2

    Comprehensive labs

Testing well beyond a standard panel, chosen for what your history suggests.

  3. 03

    Step 3

    Results and your plan

Dr. Hoff walks you through what your results mean and builds a personalized, root-cause plan.

  4. 04

    Step 4

    Follow-up and adjustment

Regular check-ins — many of them virtual — to track progress and refine the plan.

Treatments we may use

Your plan is built from your results, so no two look the same. Depending on what we find, it may include:

  • Nutrition guidance tailored to your labs, digestion, and goals.
  • Lifestyle changes for sleep, stress, and movement — practical steps, not a lecture.
  • Targeted nutrients when testing shows a real deficiency.
  • Bioidentical hormone therapy when hormones are a driver.
  • Medical weight loss, including GLP-1 medications when clinically appropriate.
  • Peptide therapy, prescribed only after evaluation.

Everything is physician-supervised and monitored over time.

Prevention, not just treatment

Functional medicine isn’t only for when something is wrong. Many problems — insulin resistance, thyroid autoimmunity, rising cardiovascular risk — show up in labs long before they show up as disease. Testing early and tracking trends over time lets us act while changes are small and easier to reverse. For a structured, in-depth version of that work, see our executive health and performance program.

A functional medicine doctor in Fredericksburg who works alongside your care

Functional medicine complements conventional care — it doesn’t replace it. If you see a primary care physician or specialists, we’re happy to coordinate so everyone has the full picture, and we’ll never ask you to stop a medication without talking to the doctor who prescribed it.

True You is a cash-based practice in downtown Fredericksburg, serving patients from Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, and across the region. Because insurance doesn’t set the length of your visit or which labs we can run, we can spend the time your case actually needs — and we’re transparent about costs at your consultation.

Why visits are longer here

Finding a root cause takes time: time to hear the whole story, to connect symptoms that seem unrelated, and to explain what your results mean. In a typical insurance-driven visit, that time isn’t there. As a cash-based practice, we schedule visits around what your case needs, so you leave understanding your plan — and why each piece of it is there.

Functional medicine — common questions

How is functional medicine different from conventional medicine?
Conventional medicine often matches a diagnosis to a treatment. Functional medicine asks why the problem developed and looks at how your systems interact, using deeper testing and longer visits. At True You we use both perspectives.
Is Dr. Hoff a medical doctor?
Yes. Dr. Brian C. Hoff is an MD. He combines conventional medical training with a functional, root-cause approach.
What conditions do you see most often?
Fatigue, hormone imbalance, thyroid and Hashimoto’s, gut problems, insulin resistance and weight, PCOS, and autoimmune conditions — often several at once.
How long until I feel better?
It depends on what’s driving your symptoms and how long they’ve been there. Some changes come quickly; others take months. We set realistic expectations at the start and track progress together.
Do you take insurance?
True You is a cash-based practice, so your care isn’t limited by insurance rules on testing or visit length. We’re transparent about costs during your consultation.
Can I keep seeing my regular doctor?
Yes, and we encourage it. Our care is designed to work alongside your primary care physician and any specialists you see.
What testing is included?
It depends on your history. Testing often goes beyond a standard panel — for example, a full thyroid panel with antibodies, sex hormones, fasting insulin, inflammation markers, and nutrient levels — with functional testing added when your symptoms call for it.
Do you see patients from outside Fredericksburg?
Yes. Patients come from Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, and further. Your first visit and labs are in person, and many follow-ups can be virtual.
How often are follow-up visits?
Follow-ups are scheduled around your plan — closer together at the start, then spaced out as things improve. Many can be done virtually.
Do I need to stop my current medications?
No. Never stop a prescribed medication without talking to the physician who prescribed it. We review everything you take and coordinate any changes safely.
Is functional medicine evidence-based?
Our care is grounded in established medical science: validated lab testing, physician-prescribed treatments when they’re appropriate, and nutrition and lifestyle changes with solid support behind them. What’s different is how much time we spend connecting the pieces.
Can functional medicine help with weight?
Often, yes. Weight is frequently tied to insulin, thyroid, hormones, sleep, and stress. We test those drivers and, when appropriate, build in our medical weight loss program.
